Top 5 games to pick up with your Wii U on launch day
By: Jeff Rivera
Narrowing down the list to five picks was harder than I would have guessed. While the Wii U has a lot of ports, there are some real gems at launch that are going to be taking good advantage of the Wii U's unique capabilities. I wrote the list with the idea that you had either an Xbox 360 or PS3 this generation, so if you didn't, your opinions might vary a bit and you should take a hard look at Batman: Arkham City and Mass Effect 3 in addition to what I've mentioned below.
So here we are, my top 5 picks for games to pick up on the Wii U's launch day.
New Super Mario Bros. U
The Nintendo 64 was the last Nintendo console or handheld that launched with a brand new Super Mario game (sorry, Super Mario 64 DS doesn't count). Many people blame the slow start that 3DS had on Mario's absence at launch, and Nintendo took notice. Mario will be there on day one, and he's likely to have the best game available for the Wii U.
New Super Mario Bros. U is another installment in the wildly successful "New" Super Mario Bros. franchise. Having played the game, I can attest to just how beautiful it looks and how fun it is to play, either by yourself or with one or more friends. The Wii U GamePad is used to a pretty small degree, but the core platforming is solid and carries the game well.
Bonus Reason: It's the first time Mario will officially be in HD on a Nintendo console.
ZombiU is a breath of fresh air in a genre that is starting to feel a little oversaturated. Rather than just providing a new way to mow down mindless undead, ZombiU is brutally challenging and takes a new angle one survival during an outbreak.
Having played ZombiU at press events, I'm definitely in for this one at launch. The mechanics of the game and the integration of the Wii U GamePad make this a great showcase title to have with your new system.
Bonus Reason: It's possible for the zombie you leave behind when you die to enter your friend's game and kill them.
Trine 2: Director's Cut
Trine 2 is a beautiful game, and it's far and away the best game on the Wii U download service at launch. While people tend to forget about downloadable titles on day one, don't forget about Trine 2: Director's Cut. The gameplay is perfect for casual and hardcore players to work together, and it's a gorgeous game to boot.
Bonus Reason: The game includes exclusive Wii U content and the additional DLC pack included for free.
Nintendo Land is sort of like the Wii U's version of Wii Sports. The game is meant to be accessible, immediately fun, and designed to showcase the different capabilities of the Wii U console and the GamePad. Nintendo Land draws on Nintendo's most popular franchises and puts them in mini games that provide all kinds of different experiences based on how many players you have at one time.
Bonus Reason: This, more than any other game, will get parents, kids, and grandparents all joining in at once.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Nintendo consoles haven't been the platforms of choice for shooter fans for a while now, but the Wii U could go a long ways towards making strides at winning hardcore gamers back who love a good shooter. Black Ops 2 will release for all the other consoles before the Wii U release, but the Wii U version has some extras that make it worth checking out if you aren't tied to a specific platform for online play.
Bonus Reason: The GamePad usage is awesome in all aspects of the game, be it single-player, multiplayer, or co-op.
